The Neighborhood Writing Alliance provokes dialogue, builds community, and promotes change by creating opportunities for adults in Chicagos underserved neighborhoods to write, publish, and perform works about their lives.
NWA sponsors free, weekly, and ongoing writing workshops for adults in libraries and social service centers. Participants are encouraged to write poetry and narrative about their everyday lives, personal histories, and neighborhoods. Selected pieces are published in the award-winning Journal of Ordinary Thought (JOT) and performed at 35 events annually.
NWA is community-based arts and social justice organization and is financially supported by contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, government entities, program fees, and subscriptions. The NWA team includes an in-house staff of three (the Executive Director, Assistant Director, and Program Director), workshop leaders, interns and work study students, and volunteers. We are a small but dedicated, efficient, and enthusiastic organization.
