Child Education Specialist ESL Job Description * The Families Learning Together - ESL, family literacy program, is a collaborative effort between the College of Lake County and the Waukegan Public Library. The ESL (English as a Second Language) program is designed to assist non-native English speaking families learn to read, write and speak English and prepare their children for school. The program for the adults and children is taught only in English. The program provides ESL family literacy services to non-native English speaking adults and their children, age 6 weeks to 6 years of age. Our participating ESL families not only achieve their educational goals but also learn how to prepare their children for pre-school and kindergarten, develop family reading routines and to become their childrens first teacher. The children learn how to engage with music, songs and books in a fun, learning environment. The Childrens Education- ESL staff assist the children to adjust to a school routine, develop social skills and early reading skills (listen to stories, rhyming, colors, shapes, etc.), all in an age-appropriate, engaging learning environment. The program is delivered on-site at several libraries in Lake County. The Families Learning Together Program is a grant funded and administered through the Family Literacy Program Coordinator at the Waukegan Public Library. Job Description: The Child Education Specialist- ESL provides child care and early childhood education services to children, age 6 weeks to 6 years old. The Child Education Specialist ESL reports directly to the Child Education Coordinator-ESL for work assignments and on-site direction. Child Education responsibilities include: Engaging children in developmentally appropriate activities (reading, singing, music and games) Teaching social skills (manners, sharing, resolving disagreements) Fostering learning skills and school readiness (listening, sounds, letters, shapes, colors, rhyming, etc.) Communicating with parents Assisting with snacks and naps Maintaining a safe and nurturing environment Administrative responsibilities include: Completing forms and documentation as required by the program Maintaining cleanliness of games, toys, and child care space Attending staff meetings and trainings, as needed Physical Demands Include: Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. Hours of Work The Families Learning Together Program ESL follows the academic calendar of the College of Lake County. The program runs for 32 weeks and does not meet on weekends, holidays, winter and spring break, nor over the summer semester. The ESL staff will work on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a no more than 8 hours each week. The staff will work in the morning at the Waukegan Public Library. The work day will run from 10:30 am 12:30 pm. The child education needs for the program start August 26, 2013 and run through December 20, 2013 and then again January 21,, 2014 through May 16, 2014.
Ideal Candidates (3 positions) The ideal candidate will have at least a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma. In addition, they will have a background and experience in Early Childhood Education settings working with children and families from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. o Desired education: Associates Degree or Certificate in Early Childhood Education or Development or completed several classes or in Early Childhood Development The candidate will be capable of working in a fast paced environment with minimal direction. The candidate will be flexible, easy going, and possess excellent communication skills. The candidate must have reliable transportation is mandatory, have appropriate references and pass a mandatory background check.
