Position Summary: The Director of Development for the School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) plans and implements the School’s overall fundraising program and staffs the dean on all fundraising activity. The Director is responsible primarily for soliciting major gifts from individuals and works closely with the Office of Gift Planning and the Major Gifts staff. Additionally, the Director works in close coordination with the Offices of Corporate and Foundation Relations to secure gifts from corporations and foundations. Through a close relationship with the Annual Giving Office, the Director implements the school’s annual giving strategy, soliciting gifts for the Learning Society (+$1,000). The Director participates in the life of the school, develops strong working relationships with and supports the dean, senior staff and faculty at SESP.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
· Conceptualize, implement, and oversee the overall fundraising strategy for the School of Education and Social Policy.
· Identify and personally solicit individual prospects for major gifts (+$5,000).
· Manage the dean’s development work, including identifying appropriate prospects to visit and planning trips to make the best use of fundraising time.
· Work closely with the Office of Gift Planning and Major Gifts, Foundation Relations and Corporate Relations to maximize the gift income these units provide for the school.
· Coordinate efforts with the Annual Giving Office to implement the school’s annual giving strategy. This includes direct mail, phonathons and personal annual solicitations, with an emphasis on growth in the Learning Society, the School’s leadership giving society.
· Identify and qualify a steady stream of new prospects for major gifts to the school.
· Functioning as part of the Dean’s staff, participate in the life of the school and develop strong working relationships with the dean, faculty and staff.
· Assist the Dean in the management of an advisory visiting committee, involving these key volunteers in fundraising efforts as appropriate.
· Manage stewardship activities, including the dean’s correspondence and recognition vehicles such as honor rolls and annual report.
· Implement special fundraising initiatives within the school’s strategic priorities; provide staffing to department and units within the school that wish to increase contributed income.
· Collaborate with the Business Performance Measurement and Development Information Services teams and the SESP Dean’s office to coordinate and track timely fundraising reports.
· Conduct studies and perform other projects as requested by the Dean or Associate Vice President.
Starting salary is commensurate with experience.

· A baccalaureate degree is required; advanced degree and interest in K-12 education is desirable
· Five years or more of front line major gifts development experience at an institution with an effective major gifts program, or equivalent experience in another line development position in a college or university with a comprehensive development program
· Excellent communication skills (both oral and written), sound organizational abilities, and a high degree of creativity and initiative are essential
