The Position

L.E.A.R.N. Charter School seeks an experienced and sales-oriented professional to fill the position of Director of Development.  The Director will lead all fundraising programs including major and planned gifts, annual giving, alumni relations and corporate and foundation giving.  The Director will have a unique opportunity to design and build a highly integrated fundraising operation and a creative, energetic and focused development team. The Director of Development will accelerate and grow L.E.A.R.N.’s fundraising and raise sufficient resources to support the organization’s ambitious growth plans. 

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of proactive leadership in all areas of fundraising and the ability to apply a sophisticated knowledge of fundraising and development to support an ambitious long-term strategy for expansion and growth.  Previous experiences that required strong sales skills and developing and nurturing relationships.     The Director of Development will work closely with President  & CEO and the Board of Directors in a full spectrum of development activities.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Lead the development and evaluation of development and fundraising  goals as outlined in L.E.A.R.N.’s long range business plan.

·         Create the overall development department plans and calendar of activities in coordination with the school calendar.

·         Oversee and strengthen all aspects of the corporate and foundation giving program and aggressively research, pursue, and secure new funding.

·         Manage and develop a major gifts effort and planned giving program with a focus on cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors.

·         Provide staff support to the Board of Directors and the Development Committee.

·         Manage the database system using Raiser’s Edge software.

·         Lead the stewardship of donors and volunteers.

·         Manage the office budget including analytical reporting and income forecasting.

·         Work with school leadership in determining timing and focus for capital initiatives.

·         Provide staff support to the CEO as necessary.



 

Mandatory Job Qualifications

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

·         A minimum of seven years of successful development and/or sales in the corporate sector.

·         A passion for the charter school movement;

·         Ability to design, implement and direct fundraising initiatives, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and recognition strategies;

·         Strong presentation skills to persuasively convey the mission of L.E.A.R.N. to diverse groups;

·         Ability and personality to work collaboratively with a wide range of internal constituents including board members, volunteers, teachers, staff and students;

·         Notable administrative skills as evidenced by knowledge of planning, finance, budgeting, and development information systems;

·         High degree of comfort with technology;

·         Excellent oral and written communications skills;

·         Ability and willingness to travel throughout the Chicago area as necessary;

·         A high degree of initiative and energy;

·         Creativity, an entrepreneurial spirit and flexibility; and

·         Passion for the mission of the school and a philosophy aligned with the school’s mission, values and strategic directives.

·         A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is a plus.
