Description
This job is dynamic and quick-paced, requiring extensive news media contact and frequent interaction with Lambda Legal attorneys primarily in the Chicago Office but also around the country. A central focus of this work is to establish Lambda Legal as a go-to source for legal information related to the LGBT and HIV communities as well as to release information about fast-breaking developments involving Lambda Legal’s legal and educational activities. This position will be based in Lambda Legal’s Midwest Regional office in Chicago and will be responsible for media relations in a ten state region with a focus on Illinois. S/he will report to the Communications Director.
The Public Information Officer (PIO) will work aggressively and pro-actively to secure coverage of Lambda Legal’s work in mainstream media, blogs and in outlets targeting specific constituencies and will build relationships with journalists and communicate news about breaking stories and trends in Lambda Legal’s work. The PIO will utilize new media and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to amplify our messages. He or she will work with Attorneys and other staff to respond to media queries, draft news releases, advisories, op/eds, letters to the editor, fact sheets and other materials describing Lambda Legal’s work. The Public Information Officer will need to understand key issues in Lambda Legal’s cases and in court rulings. The Public Information Officer will assist in planning and executing news conferences and assist in compiling media kits. S/he will train organizational spokespeople and clients on how to effectively position Lambda Legal’s messaging about the legal process. They will also work with department members as needed to produce editorial materials.

Mandatory Job Qualifications
Applicants should have at least two years regularly working with the media, particularly in helping proactively secure media coverage. Applicants must have excellent writing skills, with the ability to translate complex legal material into concise, accurate, and compelling language for the general public. Strong narrative writing skills are essential. Familiarity with online skills are also vital. Strong interpersonal skills, intimate understanding of news media and dedication to the issues facing LGBT people and people living with HIV along with a firm commitment to multiculturalism are required.
