Established in 1990, the Indo-American Center (IAC) provides culturally competent social services to many of the lower-income, underserved, and in many ways, disenfranchised immigrants and refugees who reside in the West Ridge neighborhood of Chicago. The Center’s mission is to facilitate the adjustment and integration of immigrants into American society.
The IAC’s Literacy Program works towards this mission by offering free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes designed to give adult learners a basic introduction to reading, writing, speaking, and listening to English. We offer a supportive, friendly learning environment, complete with mentoring opportunities with fellow colleagues and area organizations. Position: Adult ESL Instructor
Reports to: Literacy Coordinator Job Type: Part Time (15 hours per week) Salary: Dependent on experience Responsibilities: The English Instructor will be responsible for the instruction of one of our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Specifically, the English Instructor will:
1) Develop lesson plans that integrate presentation, practice, application, review and transition. 2) Plan creative classroom activities that increase learners’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. 3) Select materials appropriate to learners’ needs. 4) Plan lessons to accommodate a wide range of learning styles. 5) Provide learners with the opportunity to apply new information and skills in a wide range of contexts. 6) Incorporate learners’ prior experiences, cultural heritage, and community resources into instructional plans. 7) Participate in other events such as field trips or a volunteer in-service training. 8) Teach a two-hour adult ESL class (small group) five days a week. The English Instructor will also work with the Literacy Program Coordinator to:
1) Identify and monitor educational functioning level of learners.
2) Manage a multilevel classroom effectively.
3) Integrate technology into lesson plans when appropriate.
4) Maintain student records.
5) Collaborate with fellow staff members to create a contextualized curriculum that incorporates learners’ needs. To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume to mshah |
